Your child and reading September

We all want our kids to learn to read and reading instruction is the major focus of elementary school. But should reading be so difficult? Why isn’t learning to read as natural and automatic as learning to talk?

I believe is should be and can be for just about every child. Not only that, I believe that learning to read should happen …

  • without direct instruction;
  • without stress or anxiety; and
  • without flashcards, electronic gizmos, or beginner books.

I’m ready to show you how. Are you ready to find out more?

I’m so glad this topic came up. I am one of those mothers who chose not to pressure my lil’ one with books. He was never one to sit at any storytimes and then when trying to read to him, he chose to either turn the pages or became easily distracted by other events. So, occasionally I would continue to try reading, or I would show flash cards every once in awhile, but basically, I just waited until he was ready. Then, about 3-4 months ago (he is now 3), he asked for us to start reading books to him, usually 3-4 x’s per day & with pleasure, we responded. I may be one of those very fortunate parents, but I believe these milestones will definetely come when their supposed to. I want my child to be a child & learn the way he is supposed to, with minimal instruction.

Sounds like you and your little one are comfortable with each other, and that’s a key piece. I’m glad to know that you’re sensitive to the cues your child is providing. I don’t recommend flash cards – ever – but reading aloud is important.

Thanks Patricia. May I ask you why you wouldn’t recommend flashcards? I think they are good, especially for recognizing at least the pictures. About 6-months ago my husband recommended that I purchase a program called “You’re baby can Read” and you know, many people swear by it but I’m not really sure it works. I feel that kids should learn at their own pace. It’s important for parents like me to continually teach them on a daily basis about everything.
