When to start
Learning to read starts long before kindergarten. But because we wait so long to develop reading ability, children often have great difficulty with the task. Just as learning to talk starts in infancy (even before birth!), so learning to read starts in the first months of life.
So if you’re reading this when your child is just six months old, you’re not “thinking ahead” but right on time. If your child is older, immediate attention is required. And if your child is nearly a kindergartener already, there are specific things you can do now and later, when she’s a school student, to make learning to read go more smoothly for her.
When to start? At about the time your baby can roll over and sit up with help.
“Spontaneous” Does Not Mean “Overnight”
Spontaneous means “on its own and without effort.” It does not mean “suddenly or magically.” There is no magic to learning to read and it takes time. Give your child time by laying the groundwork early.
